Diaper-Free!

Yes, we are diaper-free at 19 months....and it's fantastic!!! Yea, Leighton!!!


Everyone keeps asking "how did you do it?"....and honestly, it was mostly her own motivation and interest, but here's the story:

Leighton started waking up in the morning dry around 17 months...and, on a whim, I offered her to go potty...she took me up on it and actually went potty!! I had no hope for anything, but offered each time she was dry after nap or nighttime...sometimes she wanted to, other times she didn't. I never pushed the issue.

Then about 3 weeks ago, Leighton had a naked weekend and we had a "let's go" party all weekend...and she was excited about it. I never asked "do you have to go potty?" but instead said "let's go!" (Now I ask her, but most of the time she tells me without asking...)

Plus, each week her reward changed with her interest...so week 1 she loved Reese's Pieces...then week 2 she was obsessed with fruit snacks (which used to be a normal part of our day, but then became the "special treat" for going potty), and the last week it was popsicles (homemade V-8 fusion pops): Leighton calls them "di-go-de-gos".

We used the toilet cushion, not an actual potty chair (I didn't want to clean that thing all the time...yucka! and I didn't want her to fear the "big potty") Oh and no Pull-Ups....her choice was diaper or panties.

We still put her in a diaper for bedtime, but she wakes up completely dry, so I don't know why I still do it....she'll probably start refusing the nighttime diaper soon too!

I must admit that Leighton has her cousin Taylor (2) and her friend Emily (3) who also use the potty and were 100% part of Leighton's motivation. What great role models!!
